The 8th annual South Dakota Kayak Challenge returns May 25-27th. Racers in this challenge face 72 miles of wind and waves in the National Park Service’s Missouri National Recreational River, a unique waterway that is the only NPS property that holds the designations of Wild and Scenic River, National Park and National Water Trail. The Challenge welcomes racers of all backgrounds who seek a challenge, beginning with pre-race briefing on Friday, May 25 in Yankton and ending in South Sioux City, Nebraska at 1 p.m. Sunday.
Locals cherish this American waterway and the South Dakota Kayak Challenge helps celebrates the grandeur of the river for both newcomers and veteran racers/river paddlers. Communities from start to finish provide support, volunteers, racers and financial contributions to make the race possible. While the race starts at 7 a.m. in Yankton on Saturday, the 26th, interested Vermillion-area residents are encouraged to join the Vermillion Area Chamber & Development Company’s watch party from the Frost Trail from 11 am until 1 pm that day. We will watch for and cheer on the kayakers from this beautiful vantage point, and visitors are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch and stay awhile. There will be information materials about water safety and features of our precious national park, beverages, and more. This event is proudly co-sponsored by H&R Block of Vermillion.
