In 1846, a group which has come to be referred to as the Donner Party left their Midwest homes to head west to what is now the state of California. The journey took many unexpected turns, and only about half of the group survived for the duration of the trip. Through watching a video and participating in a book discussion led by Holly Straub, we will explore what the Donner Party can teach us about humanity and survival under the most trying and desperate of circumstances. The book that will be discussed is The Indifferent Stars Above: The Harrowing Saga of the Donner Party, by Daniel James Brown (optional reading, but suggested). Copies of the book are available for checkout at the Vermillion Public Library.
